Introduction

Sunuwar Community is one of the 59 indigenous nationalities recognized by the Nepal Government and enlisted in Marginalized Group. The eastern region ( Sunkoshi Wari ) of Nepal is considered as the traditional homeland of Sunuwar People. Ramechhap, Okhaldunga, Solukhumbu, Dolkha, Udaypur, Sindhuli are the major districts where the Sunuwar People are densely populated. According to Government Census Report(2001), population of Sunuwar Community is 95,254 Consisting of Male population 48065 and a female population 47189. Sunuwar People (SP) are a branch of Kirant Family and they have their own language, culture, tradition and costumes which are slightly similar with the other members of Kirant Family.

Agriculture is the major occupation of the SP, however some of them are involved in Army(British, Indian, Nepal), Government and non-government service, and private enterprises. Sunuwar Peoples are famous for making utensils out of Bamboo (Bhakari, Doko, Nanglo, Dalo etc.). Similarly, Sunuwar Women are skilled in Knitting Works.

Sunuwar Women's Society is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-governmental organization, founded with strong commitments of preserving and promoting the socio-cultural, politico-economic rights of the Sunuwar Women. It was founded in the year 2056 BS and registered at the District Administration Office, Kathmandu the same year. It is affiliated in Social Welfare Council and also a member organization of the National Indigenous Women Federation (NIWF), an umbrella organization of 24 indigenous women's national organizations. It is one of the founder members of NIWF

SWS comprises of 13 members of Central Executive Committee (CEC) elected by the General Assembly through a democratic process. The CEC in responsible for overseeing programs, abiding the instructions, policies and guidelines issued by the General Assembly.
